This is me reminding myself. It’s Merry Christmas time, the time that some of us will spend days stacked on top of people who have our same history. If unforgiven hides, it rubs up in brushing elbows at the sink. It’s winter now. Christmas is finally here, and what we’ve waited for comes. We wake and give and open and fill up till we sleep, and then, next day, it’s still winter. We have the faith left over, what we don’t pack into a box for next year.
This is me reminding myself: God made the Winter Solstice, the season of gray listening to songs on repeat. He made the shining lights, the loud jollying family, and he made the after, the let down, the resolve for resolution.
My best work comes this time of year. This. I’m reminding myself. A brand new calendar. A life of Return. This season is only a launching pad.
We, you and I, cannot forget to listen to good music after Christmas. See you then, when the day gets longer, the skin more dry. We’ll talk of love.

Sara Bareilles is one of my favorites.
oh you! stack on top of them and be jolly.
and yes, to remember, I’ll try: there is joy after, much, too.
I’d never heard that song. I think it might be my new favorite. It just feels like snowflakes.
Oh, Amber. You are one of my favorite reads on the entire internet.
Dark days with songs on repeat. You’re right, that those days are God-gifts, too.
I love your writing. Can’t wait for more in the new year. Merry Christmas.
You know us all so well.
Steph
This is perfect. And you are wonderful.
Merry Christmas, friend.
Amber, what a winter song. Thanks.. enjoying this, as I soak up the afterglow of Christmas. I was thinking the same winter thoughts as I wrote my Christmas post last night. Here to wish you Merry Christmas, and hope you had a wonderful evening last night.
Oh so very true. These long days of winter can seem so dark and lonely. It is always good to remember who gave us these days.
